Overview

Jan Handrik-Ćěsla (1840–1915), a Sorbian student of the Lesser-Side German gymnasium and a boarder at the Lusatian Seminary in Prague, wrote poetry in Upper-Sorbian and translated Czech literature into Upper-Sorbian, including the farce Rohovín Čtverrohý by Václav Kliment Klicpera, a play without female roles that proved the best choice for the birth of the Sorbian theatre because of the then strong aversion female actresses in the conservative Sorbian community. Pětr Dučman (1839–1907), a Sorbian student of the Prague Medical Faculty, added a prologue explaining the program and aim of the Sorbian theatre. The very first performance in Sorbian took place on October 2, 1862 in the Upper-Lusatian town of Bautzen (Budyšin); its success helped to break the prejudices and founded the Sorbian theatrical tradition. Pětr Dučman thereafter graduated from Prague University to become a senior consultant at Bautzen hospital; Jan Handrik-Ćěsla graduated from the gymnasium and then also from the Prague Medical Faculty to became a general practitioner in the small central-Bohemian town of Neveklov until his death.
