Anonymous donation of gametes and anonymous births: common ethical, psychosocial and legal aspects

Overview
Assisted reproduction through the donation of gametes and anonymous childbirths or anonymous handovers of babies is a hot and controversial topic not only in Europe. The main contradictory points are found in Article 7 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and Article 8 of the Convention on Human Rights, interpreted by some authorities as the right of a human to know their genetic origin. That is why a number of countries have switched to non-anonymous donation, without the possibility of anonymous births, baby boxes, etc. The Czech Republic has anonymous gamete donation by law; anonymous births are not allowed; baby boxes exist but are criticised. The Czech Republic has signed both Conventions and is obliged to fulfil them. We describe and analyse the problem from ethical-psycho-social and legal perspective in the text.
