Autoimmune thyroiditis in women of infertile couples

Overview

Thyroid gland plays an important role in reproduction. Autoimmune thyroiditis (AT) with, or without thyroid dysfunction could be associated with infertility, pregnancy loss, and assisted reproduction failure. The aim of this pilot study was to identify the prevalence of AT in women of infertile couples. Thyroid function, ultrasound and antibodies to thyroid gland were measured in 128 women of infertile couples (30.2 ± 4.1 years) and 41 age-matched controls (fertile women 30.3 ± 4.4 years). Fine needle aspiration biopsy was performed in some women to verify AT. The prevalence of AT in women of infertile couples was higher compared to fertile controls (25.8% versus 9.8%, p = 0.031). There was not significant difference in levels of thyreotropin, free thyroxin and the volume of thyroid gland between the groups. The prevalence of AT according to cause of infertility was assessed in 105 women with only one cause of infertility. It was 26.2% in woman with ovarian factor of infertility, 25.0% in women with tubal factor of infertility, 16.7% in woman with endometriosis, 10.3% in women of couples with male factor of infertility and 25.0% in women from couples with unknown cause of infertility, however these differences were not significant compared to controls. The study showed a significantly higher prevalence of AT in women of infertile couples than in healthy fertile controls and illustrated the importance of antibodies to thyroid gland assessment in this women.
