Overview

Acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a frequent life threatening condition with a high mortality rate. Care of patients consists of hospitalisation with an intensive vital signs monitoring and mainly of an existence of a multidisciplinary team, which must be unified in diagnostic and therapeutic processes. In order to increase quality of care, such services must be centralised and assisted with an obligatory directive in individual health care facilities. Since September 1st, 2000 a profiling of Clinics of Internal Medicine has been established in the Teaching Hospital in Olomouc. In this framework the IInd Clinic of Internal Medicine has been entrusted with a care of patients with GI diseases, liver diseases, and diabetes mellitus. Part of its work also consists of a care of patients with acute GI bleeding. A sample of 831 patients with signs of acute upper GI bleeding has been admitted to the Teaching Hospital Olomouc during a 6-year-long period and we witnessed that a uniform care of these patients simplified organisation of care, reduced a length of a hospital stay and thereby reduced costs.
