Overview
Oncology diseases are the second leading cause of death in the world and in the Czech Republic. Screening means testing the population in order to find the disease in its early, asymptomatic stage. The benefit of screening programs is the improvement of prognosis and the possibility of using less radical, and usually also cheaper, therapy. However, this presupposes cooperation of patients and their participation in preventive examinations and screening programs covered by health insurance. The general practitioner plays an important role in cancer prevention for adults, particularly with their knowledge of a patient’s socio-economic factors (social relations, education, place of residence), occupational and environmental factors. GPs can also act educationally in primary prevention because they have the trust of their clients. This allows them to target an approach to each individual.
