Overview

The effectiveness of protection against undesired late affects of exposure to chemical substances can be monitored using the results of testing the genotoxic activity of chemical substances and compounds, further by biological monitoring of exposure which yields evidence on mutual interaction between the human organism and genotoxic substances and their mixtures, and, finally, by monitoring the biological effect following the response of the organism to these xenobiotics. Biomarkers of exposure, effects and susceptibility have been used for screening and repeated follow-up (monitoring) of selected groups of individuals exposed to xenobiotics, serve as a basis to estimate of the magnitude of exposure to chemical substances from any source including activities associated with life style for both the individual and population groups. Thus, using biomarkers, one can not only to assess the magnitude of exposure to genotoxic substances, but subsequently even estimate of the degree of risk for population groups after environmental and occupational exposure to genotoxic xenobiotics. Primary prevention of consequences of exposure to substances with late effects represents in the first place lowering the magnitude of their exposure and reduction of sequels of interaction between the xenobiotics and human organism. Integral component of primary prevention of late effects of genotoxins is chemoprevention involving rational nutrition with sufficient supply of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and beneficial essential trace elements.
