News Teriflunomide vs. Dimethyl Fumarate in Real Practice: We Know the Winner! Will It Surprise You?
Teriflunomide and dimethyl fumarate are disease-modifying drugs (DMDs) used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). Regarding the course, form, and severity of MS, their target groups are comparable in their characteristics. These DMDs are therefore ideal candidates for mutual comparison. Swedish authors decided to compare their effectiveness based on data from real clinical practice obtained through the Swedish National Registry.

How does it manage to affect the quality of life of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) according to data from real clinical practice in the Nordic countries? What is adherence to this therapy like? And what are its health-economic consequences? We briefly summarize the answers to these questions.
News Early Implementation of Highly Effective Therapy for Multiple Sclerosis
The ongoing debate about changing the approach to treating relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) from an escalation strategy to the early implementation of highly effective therapy (HET) is based on the documented high inflammatory activity of the disease in its early stages and the concept of a therapeutic window for its suppression shortly after diagnosis. We bring you a summary of several recent pieces of information about the benefits and safety of HET as an initial treatment for RRMS.
News Combined Treatment of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in Frail Patients – Results from Real-World Clinical Practice
Treatment of older patients and those with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) who are not in good physical condition has advanced significantly in recent years. The addition of obinutuzumab to chlorambucil therapy has extended both progression-free survival and overall survival for patients. The authors of the presented study evaluated the efficacy and safety of obinutuzumab in real-world clinical practice.

Tumors of the head and neck are often diagnosed at an advanced stage. With the availability of modern treatments, such as immunotherapy or radiotherapy modalities, prognosis and chances for long-term survival are improving. We discuss trends not only in proton therapy for oropharyngeal tumors and the prospects of combining treatment methods for these diagnoses with the head doctor of the Proton Center Prague Associate Professor MUDr. Jiří Kubeš, Ph.D.
News HPD 2024: Czech data from real-world practice confirm that mucolytic treatment can reduce COPD exacerbations, even in the future
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a global issue. Does it create the same burden everywhere? How does it contribute to premature deaths? How do women cope with COPD, and what significant problem does it pose for them? What factors contribute to it not being considered solely a smoker's disease? Why is it appropriate to add mucoactive agents when trying to eliminate COPD exacerbations? What emerged from early COPD screening conducted in the Czech Republic, and what do Czech real-world data show regarding the effectiveness of erdosteine in exacerbations? And what should be included in the proper diagnosis and treatment of this disease? All these topics were covered in a lecture by the head of the Pulmonary Clinic of the Medical Faculty of Charles University and University Hospital Hradec Králové, Associate Professor Vladimír Koblížek, M.D., Ph.D., during the XXVIII Hradec Pneumology Days held from April 24-26, 2024.
News Prim. Václava Adámková: People mistakenly believe that there are enough antibiotics and that they will always handle infections
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), by 2050, infections untreatable with antibiotics could become the leading cause of death, surpassing cardiovascular and oncological diseases. Rising antimicrobial resistance was one of the main topics at the VIII Congress of Clinical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, and Epidemiology (KMINE 2022), held in September in Prague. The topic was also the focus of the expert block ‘ATB stewardship,’ where epidemiologist Petr Smejkal, infectologist Aleš Chrdle, and microbiologist Václava Adámková discussed possible solutions to this global problem. We asked Adámková to summarize insights into the presented issues for us.

Based on 81 scientific papers published between 2010 and 2021, experts from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore have prepared an overview of the current epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STD). We summarize information on the diagnosis of gonorrhea, chlamydial infections, M. genitalium, trichomoniasis, genital infections by HSV-1/2, and HPV using nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT), the most well-known method being PCR. NAAT shows high sensitivity and specificity in testing for these diseases.

News Is Six Months of Adjuvant Targeted Therapy Sufficient for Early Breast Cancer?
The inclusion of adjuvant targeted therapy with chemotherapy for early HER2-positive breast cancer significantly improved patient outcomes. Since 2006, based on data from registration studies, the gold standard for adjuvant therapy has been 12 months of trastuzumab administration. However, similar effects were observed in a smaller study with just 9 weeks of treatment. The presented clinical trial therefore investigated the non-inferiority of shorter treatment duration (6 months).
