Overview

Carcinoma of the larynx accounts for 2.2% of all malignant tumours in men and 0.4%in women. From the microscopical aspect more than 90% of laryngeal carcinomas are of thesquamous cell type. The objective of the investigation is clinical and pathological evaluation of therelatively rare incidence of biphasic basaloid laryngeal tumours and in the case-record of one patient with basaloid carcinoma they describe the clinical and histological finding, histopathologi-cal differential diagnosis and treatment. Basaloid carcinoma is a very malignant laryngeal tumour,the unusual character of which is emphasized by the presence of sarcomatoid changes. Immunohis-tochemical examination confirmed the epithelial origin of the tumour. It is a metatypical transfor-mation of the epithelium into the sarcomatoid component. The application of modern examinationmethods such as immunohistochemistry assist a more accurate histopathological diagnosis andmore accurate prognosis from the clinical aspect.
