Overview
The seventieth anniversary of the Fourth Department of Internal Medicine, First Medical Faculty of Charles University and General University Hospital in Prague, was an occasion for a grateful memory of the founder and first chief of this department, Professor Bohumil Prusík. Native of Klatovy, south-west Bohemia, professor Prusík became a prominent representative of Czech internal medicine; his pioneering studies in the fields of cardiology and angiology gained a high recognition in our country, as well as abroad. As a clinician, professor Prusík had a keen interest in pathophysiological and biochemical aspects of cardiovascular diseases, as well as in new instrumental and biochemical diagnostic methods. He founded the Cardiovascular Research Laboratory and initiated epidemiological studies of ischaemic heart disease. He also dedicated himself to pregradual and postgradual teaching, including internal propedeutics, and has trained foremost specialists. He maintained a great number of international contacts, being a member of many professional societies. In 1961, Professor Prusík was elected President of the International Union of Angiology.
