Geriatrics as an inter-disciplinary science on the threshold of the 21st century

Overview
Author in his review refers to geriatrics as a peculiar scientific branch with a close relationship to internal medicine. Internal medicine is in fact a basic source for everyday clinical practice of geriatrician. However, there are some additional specific methods and approaches used while treating seniors. In addition to the basic characteristics of geriatrician's work the review highlights the importance of function examination in geriatrics, which, in addition to the physical evaluation, should stress the evaluation of self-sufficiency as well as mental and social status. Furthermore, the author analyses population age structure and associated specific issues. In the geriatrician's clinical practice the author emphasises the use of specific geriatric regimen. He analyses also current demographic situation and its prognosis not only in the Czech Republic but also world-wide. He points at the importance of demographic prognosis associated with the growth of elderly population and at the same time he points at the phenomenon of ageing of the elderly population. He presents what are the optimal indications for geriatric hospitalisation and which patients can gain the most of it. In the end the author refers to how senior health care in the Czech Republic is provided and what is the real anticipated need for it.
