Overview

The usage of the Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART) is an exponentially growing trend worldwide and it is estimated, that especially in developed countries, 2–10% of newborns are currently being conceived in vitro. Epidemiologic and clinical studies have described the possible long-term deleterious effects on the health and welfare of both mothers threated with ART and their offsprings. We have evidence that conception via ART increasis the risk of serious pregnancy complications (especially preeclampsia, pre-term birth, low birth weight) and modification of the cardiovascular phenotype towards higher risk of arterial hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus and pulmonary hypertension in childhood and adulthood. Both ART and preeclampsia are considered to be new inclusions in the list of cardiovascular risk factors. Even if the absolute risk seems small, it is necessary to formulate a plan of the specific care, from periconception to the puerperium and follow-up years after delivery for obstetricians and primary care physicians to minimise maternal and infant morbidity and preterm mortality.

KEY WORDS:
assisted reproduction, pregnancy complications, cardiovascular risk
