Overview

From the beginning of 21st Century the dramatic increase in the popularity of waterpipe smoking has been reported in the countries in Europe and in the USA, mainly among affluent university students. It has been well documented, that both the waterpipe tobacco mixtures and the charcoal heating them, are the unique sources of many harmful chemicals, such as respirable particular matters (PM2.5), carbon monoxide, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile compounds and benzene. The increasing popularity of waterpipe tobacco smoking worldwide is alarming, as it was associated with increased risk of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, lung cancer and probably also for leukemia. Both active and passive smokers can be victims of myth about safe social events spent around the water pipe, because of the common beliefs that the water can absorb all dangerous chemicals. Now, it is the right time to accept the regulatory actions and activities for the waterpipe smoking prevention.
