News Residual Pulmonary Hypertension After Endarterectomy: How Common Is It?

Pulmonary endarterectomy is the only potentially curative option in the treatment of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). What are its outcomes and in what percentage of cases does it lead to complete cure? A meta-analysis, significantly contributed to by Czech experts, was dedicated to the improvement of signs and symptoms of CTEPH after performing endarterectomy.

News Medium to Long-term Results of PFC Sigma Total Knee Arthroplasty

The PFC Sigma knee implant was introduced in 1997. It is the most commonly used system for total knee arthroplasty in England and Wales, accounting for 34.9% of primary implantations in 2006. Studies evaluating medium to long-term implantation outcomes have shown that it is an implant with a high survival rate, low re-implantation rate, and very good clinical results.

News Experiences with AHA in Two Czech Centers and Risk Factor Evaluation

This summer, the journal Haemophilia published the results of an analysis of data from a relatively large Czech cohort of patients with acquired hemophilia A (AHA). The goal was to identify risk factors associated with early death and AHA relapse. Additionally, the authors addressed the question of the effect of higher doses of corticosteroids on treatment outcomes and patient mortality.

News Hypotension during treatment with sacubitril/valsartan: practical tips for prevention and management

Despite the undeniable benefits of sacubitril/valsartan in terms of morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic heart failure, its administration can be complicated by side effects. The most common of these is hypotension. Although it is an unpleasant complication, it does not –⁠ and should not –⁠ always be a reason to discontinue therapy. Fear of hypotension should not lead to not prescribing sacubitril/valsartan at all. We provide practical guidance on how to approach this clinical situation.

News Register of Patients Treated with Growth Hormone (REPAR): Data Analysis as a Path to Further Optimization of Care

Treatment with recombinant growth hormone (rhGH) is available in the Czech Republic for all children meeting the indication criteria. A network of 10 centers covers the entire country, and all doctors authorized to prescribe growth hormone are united in the Pediatric Growth Hormone Working Group. The Czech national Register of Patients Treated with Growth Hormone (REPAR) has been collecting data on patients treated with rhGH since 2014. The aim of the presented work was to analyze selected data and present the basic demographics of patients included in this database during the first 5 years of its existence.

News View on the Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis with Baricitinib Using the NNT Indicator

Clinical parameters assessed by patients themselves are an important tool in evaluating the effectiveness of new drugs and are particularly significant in the evaluation of treatments for chronic painful conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). An analysis of clinical trial results presented at the European Rheumatology e-Congress in June 2020 focused on the effectiveness of the Janus kinase inhibitor baricitinib on parameters assessed directly by patients. Effectiveness was analyzed using the NNT indicator.

News Adding Paracetamol to Tramadol to Relieve Early Postoperative Pain After Lumbar Discectomy

A recently published study is likely the first prospective randomized controlled trial comparing the postoperative analgesic efficacy of a tramadol and paracetamol combination versus tramadol alone. Its results favor the combination, with significantly lower pain scores during the first 30 minutes and reduced tramadol consumption within the first 24 hours post-surgery.
