News Long-term Safety and Efficacy of Ozanimod in the Treatment of Relapsing Forms of MS

Ozanimod is classified as a modulator of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) receptors types 1 and 5. It is approved for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) and moderate to severe ulcerative colitis (UC) and continues to undergo intensive clinical research. The DAYBREAK open-label, single-arm study for participants with RRMS from previous trials with ozanimod was scheduled to be completed by January 2023, and its final results can therefore be expected soon. The following article presents the interim analysis results of this study 5 years after initiation.

News Rebound effect after denosumab discontinuation in a patient with lung cancer

The case study of a patient with metastatic lung cancer describes the emergence of vertebral fractures following the discontinuation of denosumab. This antiresorptive treatment was halted prophylactically to reduce the risk of osteonecrosis in connection with a planned dental procedure. Fifteen months after receiving the last dose of denosumab, the patient experienced atraumatic compression fractures of the spine requiring kyphoplasty to alleviate symptoms. Other causes of the fractures were ruled out.

News Metabolic Effect of Telmisartan and Candesartan in Kidney Transplant Patients

News Options for Systemic Therapy of Advanced Stage Small Cell Lung Cancer

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is the most aggressive type of lung tumor. Although it responds well to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, due to the early onset of treatment resistance, the 5-year survival rate is less than 10%. After more than 30 years of very limited progress in treating advanced SCLC patients, immune checkpoint inhibitors (checkpoints) have been introduced to the market, significantly prolonging survival. What are the current recommendations for treating patients with advanced SCLC?

News How to Dose Beta-Blockers After Myocardial Infarction?

In patients after myocardial infarction (MI), there is a frequent administration of too low doses of beta-blockers (BB) and rare upward titration of their dose after discharge from the hospital. The SWEDEHEART study investigated to what extent the BB dose actually affects 5-year cardiovascular (CV) outcomes, and data from the American registry allowed a focus on mortality after MI depending on BB dosing.

News INFOGRAPHIC: LDL Cholesterol - Recommended Target Values

Elevated levels of LDL cholesterol are a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, which remain the most common cause of death among adult Czechs. We have strong evidence about who and how LDL-c should be reduced, and ample treatment options to achieve this. Yet, more than half of the patients do not achieve the target LDL-c values. A useful tool for practice can be the 'risk traffic light' - an infographic clearly showing which risk category a patient falls into and what the recommended target LDL-c values are for each risk category. This makes it easier to plan tailor-made individual treatment.

News Pregnancy and Childbirth in a Woman with VWD − A Case Study

Pregnancy and childbirth are relatively demanding periods and situations for women with von Willebrand disease (vWD) from the perspective of hemostasis. They can be associated with an increased risk of bleeding for both the mother and the newborn. For this reason, a multidisciplinary approach to every pregnant woman is essential, involving a hematologist (ideally in a specialized center), the obstetric team, and then also a gynecologist who will care for the woman in the postpartum period. The optimal approach is to create a birth plan early, which will be carefully followed during labor and especially in the postpartum period. The following case study clearly illustrates these points.

News Impact of Dabigatran and Warfarin Treatment on the Risk of Acute Kidney Injury in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation

What clinical characteristics in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation may indicate a higher risk of acute kidney injury? Does the modality of anticoagulation therapy play a role in its incidence? These questions were the focus of an extensive retrospective study conducted in an Asian setting.

News Newer Beta Blockers Offered for Use in Atherosclerosis Prevention

An article highlighting recent scientific findings on the beneficial effects of beta-blockers (BB) directly on the arterial wall and the potential benefit for the prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) by adding BB to already established strategies for treating dyslipidemia and diabetes was published this year in the journal Current Atherosclerosis Reports.
