News Desirable Side Effects of Antidiabetics
The days when diabetology was a field solely focused on normalizing blood sugar levels are long gone. Today, the approach in diabetology increasingly prioritizes influencing the patient's overall life prognosis, particularly reducing cardiovascular risk. What can be the desirable side effects of the main groups of antidiabetics that are not related to merely lowering glucose levels?
News Enoxaparin in Weight-Based Dosing for Thromboprophylaxis in Hospitalized Cancer Patients
Cancer patients are at higher risk of developing thromboembolic disease during hospitalization. Currently, there is not enough evidence supporting the efficacy and safety of the standard fixed dose of low molecular weight heparin in individuals at high risk of thromboembolic disease. Therefore, a Phase II clinical study evaluated the efficacy and safety of weight-adjusted dosing in these patients.
News COVID Pneumonia: How Can Erdosteine Help and What Did a Clinical Study Suggest?
When patients who have recovered from COVID pneumonia begin home treatment, they are often far from being symptom-free. General practitioners and outpatient pulmonologists often have to address these persistent symptoms. According to a study conducted by Recipharm, erdosteine may be a suitable adjunct treatment for these patients, even when they have negative COVID-19 tests. Why is this the case?
News FLEX – A New Predictive Model for Assessing Follicular Lymphoma Risks
Overall survival of patients with advanced-stage follicular lymphoma (FL) who experience early disease progression after chemotherapy remains low. Currently used clinical prognostic models do not provide optimal sensitivity and specificity for identifying this patient subgroup. The presented study by an international team of authors introduced a new assessment index that achieves better outcomes.
News Socio-economic Benefits of Using Obinutuzumab in 1st Line Treatment of Follicular Lymphoma
Pharmacoeconomic analyses remind us that our patients' diseases affect not only themselves or the healthcare system, but also have an impact on the entire society. Patients with follicular lymphoma (FL) are also life partners, parents, relatives, and household members, and last but not least, they are also employees or service workers. How treatment success can reflect in these aspects is suggested by a German study.
News Expression of PD-L1 in Patients with Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
An international team of authors published a systematic review addressing the relationship between the programmed cell death receptor ligand (PD-L1) and important clinical characteristics of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the significance of PD-L1 expression for NSCLC prognosis, and the potential use of this biomarker to predict the response of patients with advanced/metastatic NSCLC to therapies targeting the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway.
News Neoadjuvant Immunotherapy in Resectable Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
Antibodies against the programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) improve the survival of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, their use has not yet been tested in patients with resectable NSCLC. In 2018, the New England Journal of Medicine published the results of a pilot study of neoadjuvant therapy with nivolumab in patients with resectable NSCLC. Based on the promising results of this study, the investigative team subsequently decided to also test a combination of nivolumab and ipilimumab.
News Two Is Not Enough: Efficacy of Alemtuzumab in Subsequent Cycles
The goal of the recent pooled analysis of the CARE-MS and TOPAZ study results published in the journal Multiple Sclerosis was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of alemtuzumab in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) who received alemtuzumab in additional cycles beyond the first 2 cycles.
News Different doses of LMWH in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 – interim experience
Many experts recommend administering heparin to patients with COVID-19 as part of anticoagulant prophylaxis, especially in severe forms of this infection. However, data on dosage, administration duration, and the effectiveness of this approach are limited. Therefore, authors from Bologna, Italy, investigated the relationship between various doses of low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) and mortality in patients hospitalized with COVID-19.
News Efficacy of Romiplostim in Children with Persistent or Chronic ITP
The effect of the thrombopoietin receptor agonist romiplostim in adult patients with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is well known. Equally important, however, are data on its treatment in children — presented by a study whose results were published in the journal Lancet.
News Geriatrics and Nutrition in Old Age - Invitation
We invite you to watch a webinar dedicated to the topic of nutrition in old age. The impetus for its creation was the fact that from September 1, 2020, physicians specializing in geriatrics are allowed to prescribe outpatient sipping to ensure early nutritional intervention for malnourished patients.
News Tiapride versus Haloperidol in the Therapy of Aggressiveness and Agitation in Elderly Patients with Cognitive Impairment
Acute restlessness, agitation, and aggression can be associated with psychiatric disorders but also be manifestations of somatic illnesses. Psychomotor agitation combined with disorientation is typical, for example, in older individuals with cognitive impairments. The primary goal of therapy is to calm the patient, most often using antipsychotics. The clinical study presented below compared the efficacy and safety of the antipsychotics haloperidol and tiapride versus placebo in patients with acute agitation and aggression who were diagnosed with mild to moderate cognitive impairment.
News Effect of Zolpidem on the Quality of Overnight Sleep in Terms of Episodic Memory Formation
Zolpidem is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic used for the short-term treatment of insomnia in adults. Previous studies have shown that this gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA-A) agonist stimulates the occurrence of sleep spindles during short daytime sleep, thereby enhancing episodic memory. A recently published study focused on the effect of zolpidem on memory after overnight sleep.
News Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: What Can a General Practitioner Do?
When a previously healthy patient becomes breathless, it's never good news. Among the particularly serious issues that breathlessness can signal is idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). However, its prognosis no longer has to be as unfavorable as before, especially if diagnosed early.
News Is Six Months of Adjuvant Targeted Therapy Sufficient for Early Breast Cancer?
The inclusion of adjuvant targeted therapy with chemotherapy for early HER2-positive breast cancer significantly improved patient outcomes. Since 2006, based on data from registration studies, the gold standard for adjuvant therapy has been 12 months of trastuzumab administration. However, similar effects were observed in a smaller study with just 9 weeks of treatment. The presented clinical trial therefore investigated the non-inferiority of shorter treatment duration (6 months).
