News Association of M2 Haplotype of the Annexin A5 Gene with Recurrent Reproductive Losses

Annexin A5 (ANXA5) is a placental anticoagulant protein that ensures adequate blood supply to the fetus during pregnancy, and its deficiency can increase the incidence of vascular thrombosis in the placenta. Current research shows that the M2 haplotype of the ANXA5 gene may be associated with recurrent reproductive losses and obstetric complications due to placental disorders.

News Sjögren's Syndrome as a Cause of Dry Eye Syndrome

Primary Sjögren's syndrome represents a complex autoimmune disease primarily affecting glands with exocrine secretion. Dry eye syndrome ranks among the most common difficulties for patients with Sjögren's syndrome. Essential pillars of therapy include regular application of preservative-free artificial tears, escalated to anti-inflammatory treatment if necessary.

News Reduction of Enthesitis in Patients with Psoriatic Arthritis Taking Tofacitinib

Inflammation in the area where a tendon, ligament, or joint capsule attaches to the bone occurs in 35–50% of patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Its presence is associated with higher activity of PsA, and its intensity correlates with the degree of joint damage. Patients with enthesitis are generally in worse functional status and report greater fatigue, pain, and decreased productivity. How can treatment with tofacitinib affect this important domain of PsA?

News Levodropropizine vs. dextromethorphan: Which one to recommend to your patients and why?

Reducing cough intensity and nighttime awakenings, rapid onset of action, simple dosing regimen, and good treatment tolerance—these are the properties we expect from antitussive drugs, not only in pediatrics. So which of these wins in these parameters compared to other commonly used over-the-counter antitussives?

News Prophylaxis with Enoxaparin After Total Knee or Hip Replacement

Venous thromboembolic disease is a significant cause of complications in surgical patients during and after hospitalization. The authors of a recently published Portuguese observational study evaluated the incidence of complications with prophylaxis using low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) enoxaparin in a population after hip or knee joint replacement.

News Metamizole vs. Tramadol in Postoperative Analgesia

Metamizole and tramadol are well-known analgesics that have been used in practice for a long time. Interesting insights into these substances were provided by the studies presented below. Spanish doctors evaluated the efficacy and safety of metamizole compared to tramadol in postoperative analgesia after abdominal hysterectomy. German researchers were interested in the possibility of applying a combination of these drugs in an analgesic regime controlled by the patient.

News Fibrinogen and Management of Peripartum Life-Threatening Hemorrhage

The most common cause of maternal death in the developed world continues to be peripartum life-threatening hemorrhage. It can result as a consequence of the consumption of coagulation factors, primarily fibrinogen. The analysis presented below summarizes information on the prevention of this complication and the use of fibrinogen concentrate therapy.

News Current Therapy Options for Interstitial Lung Diseases

Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) represent a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by inflammatory or fibrotic changes in the lung parenchyma. Simply put, they can be divided into inflammatory and fibrotic, with inflammatory ILDs often progressing to a fibrotic stage. Interstitial lung diseases are also associated with high morbidity and early mortality. The following text briefly summarizes the current recommendations regarding the therapy for these diseases.

News Current Recommendations of the International League Against Epilepsy for the Treatment of Seizures in Newborns

In 2023, a team of experts in neurology, neonatology, and pediatrics, along with representatives of parents, published recommendations for the treatment of epileptic seizures in newborns. These were developed based on a systematic literature review (and in cases of insufficient evidence, based on consensus achieved using the Delphi method) and include first and second choice pharmacotherapy, dosing, duration of treatment, effects of therapeutic hypothermia, and the use of pyridoxine. We offer their summary in a nutshell (and always indicate the strength of the recommendation in parentheses).

News Can AI Help Accelerate the Development of Antibiotics for Gonorrhea and MRSA?

The overuse of antibiotics has helped bacteria become resistant to them. In the fight against antibiotic resistance, the involvement of artificial intelligence in the development of new drugs could prove beneficial. Using AI, experts from MIT examined more than 36 million possible compounds and evaluated their antimicrobial properties. The researchers also analyzed potential new compounds that had not yet been synthesized. The best candidate molecules discovered are structurally distinct from all existing antibiotics and appear to disrupt bacterial cell membranes through previously unobserved mechanisms.
