Developments in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation over the past 25 years

Overview

This article reviews the changes that have led to a broadening of the HCT program and have improved its results. These changes predominantly have involved the following: transplant teams have acquired greater experience enabling more rapid recognition and better treatment of potentially lethal complications; highly sensitive methods to diagnose complications and new drugs have been introduced; haematopoietic stem cells acquired via bone marrow mobilisation have been increasingly used; the spectrum of donors has been extended (to include haploidentical donors); there is now better understanding of the pathogenesis of certain complications and the spectrum of diagnoses as well as pre-transplant intensity have changed.
