In the first part of the review after a brief introduction on different contemporary methods of Contraception and their effectiveness the author deals with the development and contemporary state of barrier Contraception. This type comprises various old vaginal plugs, sponges as well as more recent diaphragms, cervical pessaries („caps"), condoms and different spermicides. In the subsequent part the author discusses the development of intrauterine contraceptive devices (ND) from the old inert types to modem synthetic IUD and devices with copper and progestin. Formerly popular surgical methods of female and male sterilization are followed by legalized induced abortion which of course should not be one of the contraceptive methods, and modem ways of termination of shon unwanted pregnancy with Mifapristone (RU486), methotrexate, or Tamoxifen combined with synthetic prostaglandin (misoprostol).Part II will be devoted to steroid, in particular oral Contraception, long-term Contraception and some specific methods (Contraception in adolescents, „emergency Contraception").
