Overview
The authors present a review of the clinical use of cystatin C estimation.Cystatin C is an inhibitor of cysteine proteases which is relatively stable in the systemic circulation and is easy to estimate. In clinical practice it is known in particular as an indicator by means of which glomerular filtration can be estimated. Recently analyses of cystatin C are frequently also mentioned in the context with premature atherosclerosis, vascular aneurysms, hyperhomocysteinaemia, Alzheimer's dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases.
Key words:
cystatin C - biochemical diagnosis - vascular aneurysms - early atherosclerosis - Alzheimer's dementia - hyperhomocysteinaemia - neurodegenerative disease.
