The objective of this retrospective study was to assess general knowledge of ordinary patients on obesity, its associated diseases, complications and possible treatment.Methods: Thirty general practitioners from the Prague region were sent questionnaires with questions pertaining to obesity. A total of 188 questionnaires for evaluation were obtained. From the current list of patients medical doctors were eliminated, thus 179 questinonnaires were processed.Characteristics of the examined group: The questionnaire was completed by a total of 74 men and 105 women. Their mean age was 50.8 years, the mean BMI 30.64 kg/m2. The patients comprised 25 with university education. 105 with secondary education and 39 with elementary education.Results and conclusions: It was revealed that information on obesity and other associated diseases in inadequate. But even more surprising is the fact that a very small percentage has even the vaguest idea on possible treatment.
