Sexual life in pregnancy – assessment by the SFW questionaire (Sexual Function of a Woman)

Overview
The objective of this research was to analyze sexual life in pregnancy. To meet the objectives of the research, quantitative research using anonymous questionnaires was applied. Two standardized questionnaire tools were used: Sexual Function of a Woman and the Erotic Stimuli Inventory (Hoon – Winoze). Women were asked to complete the questionnaires both from the perspective of their current situation and from the perspective of their experience prior to pregnancy. The research sample included women in the third trimester of pregnancy attending the antenatal clinic of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of the 1st LF UK (First Medical Faculty of the Charles University) and VFN (General Faculty Hospital) in Prague. Analysis of the data collected through the questionnaires provided an account of sexual life of women before and during pregnancy. The survey confirmed our hypothesis that the desire for sexual intercourse is reduced in pregnancy. Libido, frequency of sexual intercourse, the need for contact and ability to achieve orgasm are reduced during pregnancy. Responses to erotic stimuli are shifted towards a lower degree of erotic excitement. The research results suggest there is a need to improve communication and provision of information by medical staff to pregnant women and their partners. Provision of information in an anonymous form, for example by information booklet, unaffected by prejudices, attitudes, myths should be considered. Pregnant women desire more information and have the right to obtain it.
