Children with hearing impairment – prevention of the onset and development of language deprivation

Newborn hearing screening has reduced the age at which children are typically diagnosed with hearing loss. Due to early diagnosis, children can receive compensatory aids by or around the age of one, i.e., in the pre-speech period. Rehabilitation of a child with hearing loss includes rehabilitation of auditory perception and development of spoken language, as well as the timely establishment of communication styles in general, including means of visual communication, i.e., sign language. The need for and level of visual communication varies between children with hearing loss, therefore it is necessary to consider the individual situation of the child, taking into account the type of hearing loss, extent of hearing loss, age, and possibly other disabilities. Clinical practice confirms the benefits of interdisciplinary collaboration when selecting the most appropriate means of communication for children with hearing loss.
