Overview

Aging is a natural process that involves structural and functional changes in several organs. This review focuses on the changes that affect the myocardium. It recalls the basic pathogenetic mechanisms of age-related myocardial dysfunction. It also analyzes the structural changes of the myocardium, which lead to changes in the geometry and function of individual cardiac compartments. It deals with the basic natural changes of the valve system, the overall functional changes of the heart. He also deals with electrophysiological changes associated with age, changes in neuroendocrine mechanisms and the autonomic nervous system. These changes are collectively referred to as the broader term age-related myocardial remodeling.
