The impact of 24-hour movement behaviour on school performance in adolescents –⁠ a systematic review of studies from 2020–2025

Objective: The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the impact of 24-hour physical activity (24hMB) monitored using devices (i.e., components of sleep, physical activity (PA), and sedentary behavior (SB)) on school performance in adolescents aged 11 to 17 years.

Methods: Based on keywords, 2,629 potentially relevant publications were found in the Web of Science database, from which two independent experts selected 19 studies (16 original studies) and 3 systematic reviews) that met the target criteria.

Results: Analysis of selected studies using 24-hour monitoring devices showed that individual components of 24hMB are related to adolescents’ school performance, with sleep having the most significant impact on school performance. Adolescents with sufficient sleep duration showed better school performance than adolescents with insufficient or excessive sleep duration. Although PA and SB as isolated components of 24hMB have little or no effect on school performance, when combined with adherence to recommendations for other components of 24hMB, their effect on school performance increases several times.

Conclusions: Adequate sleep and adherence to recommendations for at least two of the three components of 24hMB have a positive effect on school performance in adolescents aged 11–17 years. From the perspective of successful school performance, it is therefore important to ensure that adolescents get at least enough sleep, or better yet, a combination of sufficient sleep with recommended physical activity and without excessive or interrupted sedentary behaviour.
