Overview
This article attempts, against the background of discussion about euthanasia, to find an answer to the question, why are the ethical discussions so difficult and exhausting. Firstly it highlights the tension between the individual and the common, then the article reflects upon the terminology of euthanasia, and in conclusion it analyses the philosophical concepts of conscience. It finds one root of the possible causes of these difficulties in Schleiermacher’s concept of conscience.
