Overview

Multiple sclerosis is the most frequent disabling neurological disease in the age group from 25-40 years. The pathological process affects the myelinated white matter in different areas of the brain and spínal cord and may lead to different neurological manifestations. Steadily improving laboratory, immunological and imaging diagnostic methods lead to a better understanding of the etiopathogenesis of this disease, and on its basis new therapeutic strategies are elaborated not only in neurology but also in collaborating disciplines.More than 80% patients with multiple sclerosis suffer from urologickl symptomy and in patients where the disease persists for more than 10 years we find urological symptomatology in 96%. Multiple sclerosis causes a wide spectrnm of urologickl complaints caused by dysfunctions of the lower urinary pathways and sexual dysfiznctions. These disorders frequently make it impossible to lead a normal professional and personal life and are an important source of finzstrations of patients. The objective of the present paper is to describe basic urologickl dysfunctions in patients with multiple sclerosis and possibilities of their modem diagnosis and therapy.

Key words:
multiple sclerosis - neurology - urologickl complaints.
