News New scoring system for predicting long-term survival of AML patients over 70 years and suitable for intensive chemotherapy
Based on the analysis of data from 3 large European registries (DATAML, SAL, and PETHEMA), a prognostic score for 5-year survival was created and validated for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who were given intensive chemotherapy. The ESS70+ score, determined based on parameters known at the time of diagnosis, is easily usable in routine practice for estimating overall survival of older AML patients and facilitates decisions about intensive chemotherapy.
News Can Artificial Intelligence Help Personalize Treatment for Cardiology Patients?
According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) claim an estimated 17.9 million lives annually worldwide, making them the leading cause of death. More than 4 out of 5 of these deaths are due to heart attacks and strokes, and one-third occur in people under the age of 70. An innovative project called NextGen will newly address cardiovascular diseases. Its goal is to use artificial intelligence (AI) and patient health information and genetic profiles to personalize their treatment. The project received 7.6 million euros from the EU program Horizon Europe and will be led by a 21-member consortium including representatives from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).
News Expert Consensus on the Use of Bimekizumab in the Treatment of Plaque Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis
The expert consensus published in February 2024 offers guidance on the use of bimekizumab in the treatment of patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. It is based on a literature review and an assessment of data from 19 relevant studies. A panel of 9 American dermatologists specializing in psoriasis treatment created and adopted 14 consensus statements and recommendations, 12 of which have a strength of “A”.

News Current Recommendations of the International League Against Epilepsy for the Treatment of Seizures in Newborns
In 2023, a team of experts in neurology, neonatology, and pediatrics, along with representatives of parents, published recommendations for the treatment of epileptic seizures in newborns. These were developed based on a systematic literature review (and in cases of insufficient evidence, based on consensus achieved using the Delphi method) and include first and second choice pharmacotherapy, dosing, duration of treatment, effects of therapeutic hypothermia, and the use of pyridoxine. News Epilepsy with Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizures in an Adolescent Patient – A Case Study
This is the story of Anička, a 16-year-old girl who has been treated for epilepsy since she was 14. Her condition is accompanied by generalized tonic-clonic seizures, which may need to be managed acutely with rescue medication, either at home or at school. Instead of the previously used rectally administered diazepam, a new, safer and more comfortable option for rescue medication is now available: buccally administered midazolam. This modality may also help alleviate anxiety and other psychological impacts related to the condition, as illustrated by our case study.

News Efficacy of Luspatercept in 1st Line Treatment of Anemia Due to Low-Risk Myelodysplastic Syndrome
A planned interim analysis of the COMMANDS study showed a greater benefit of the innovative treatment with luspatercept compared to the established treatment with epoetin alfa in patients with anemia due to low-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and untreated with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA). The results were published in June 2023 in the journal Lancet.

News Metamizole – wide possibilities of an analgesic with a unique mechanism of action and different routes of administration
Metamizole is a non-addictive pyrazolone analgesic with antipyretic effects, which differs from other non-opioid analgesics by its spasmolytic action. It is indicated in monotherapy and in combinations for the treatment of severe acute and chronic pain. Its high analgesic efficacy is evidenced by a low number of patients needed to treat to achieve at least 50% pain relief in 4-6 hours. The favorable safety profile of metamizole is supported by more than 100 years of clinical experience.
News Long-term survival of a 50-year-old man with metastatic pancreatic cancer on a combination of nal-IRI + 5-FU/LV in 2nd line treatment − case study
A recently published case study from the Czech Republic describes a patient with progression of pancreatic cancer following surgical treatment and adjuvant chemotherapy, who achieved a one-year survival with good quality of life on a combination of nal-IRI + 5-FU/LV after the failure of gemcitabine + nab-paclitaxel in the 1st line of palliative treatment.
