In the last 10 years, the options for anticoagulant therapy have expanded with the introduction of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). It appears that DOACs may soon replace warfarin in the first line of prevention of venous thromboembolism, not only due to their clinical advantages but also thanks to newly available reversal agents that can be administered in case of major bleeding in patients taking DOACs.
