News CASE STUDY: Surgical Procedure in an Adolescent Patient with Severe Hemophilia A on Emicizumab Prophylaxis

This case study is narrated by MUDr. Bohumír Blažek from the Clinic of Pediatric Medicine at LF OU and FN Ostrava. The patient is a 17-year-old boy with severe hemophilia A. Several months prior to the procedure under discussion, he was switched from prophylactic factor VIII administration to emicizumab prophylaxis. Subsequently, an extraction of all four molars was planned for orthodontic reasons. The case study describes the hematologist's approach to the procedure and the subsequent healing process.

News Prim. MUDr. Gustáv Ondrejka: Biological treatment of asthma eliminates the need for systemic corticotherapy

Despite advances in the therapy of bronchial asthma, a portion of patients still do not achieve the desired control of the disease. The introduction of biological treatment marked a significant milestone in management, improving the prognosis for patients previously dependent on long-term systemic corticotherapy with all its negative impacts. The recently approved reimbursement for dupilumab expands treatment options for patients with severe asthma, relieving patients of common asthma comorbidities. The current perspective on the treatment of bronchial asthma is provided by the head of the Pulmonary Department at KNTB Zlín, which includes the Center for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Severe Forms of Bronchial Asthma, Prim. MUDr. Gustáv Ondrejka, Ph.D.

News Key for Patients with PBC are Timely Diagnosis and Assessment of Therapy Effectiveness

Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) cannot be cured. It progresses slowly and over several decades leads to liver cirrhosis with all its potential consequences, including possible transplantation and the risk of premature death. The foundation of PBC pharmacotherapy is ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and in recent years, obeticholic acid (OCA) has also been available, which European and Czech guidelines recommend as the second-line treatment. One of the symposiums at this year's XLVIII May Hepatology Days also focused on PBC and its therapy, including experiences from Czech practice.
