The Hradec Gastroenterology Days 2023 were traditionally held in March at the Educational Center of the Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, in the area of University Hospital Hradec Králové. The expert program included a lecture by MUDr. Libuše Husová, Ph.D., from the Cardio-surgical and Transplant Surgery Center Brno (CKTCH), who highlighted various situations that can arise during the treatment of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) with three case studies.Source: Primary Biliary Cholangitis 25. 4. 2023News Efficacy and Safety of Empagliflozin in Patients with Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction
Previous studies have shown that the antidiabetic drug empagliflozin reduces the risk of cardiovascular death or hospitalization for heart failure in patients with heart failure with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (HFrEF), both in diabetics and non-diabetics. The aim of the EMPEROR-Preserved clinical trial was to supplement data on the efficacy and safety of empagliflozin in a population of patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF; EF LK > 40%).Source: Heart Failure 27. 4. 2022News Summary of Recommendations for the Treatment of Immune Thrombocytopenia in Pregnancy
Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by a temporary or permanent reduction in the number of platelets, leading to an increased risk of bleeding. It also occurs in 1-5 out of 10,000 pregnant women. We summarize recommendations for the treatment of these patients.Source: Immune Thrombocytopenia 28. 3. 2021News Prof. Petra Lišková: Prevention of Dry Eye Syndrome is Difficult but Not Impossible
Dry eye syndrome is one of the most common ophthalmological problems, and its incidence is rising. Ophthalmologist Prof. MUDr. Petra Lišková, Ph.D., from the Clinic of Pediatrics and Hereditary Metabolic Disorders of the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, and University Hospital in Prague, explains how these difficulties arise and why patients should visit an eye doctor rather than relying solely on self-treatment.Source: Ophthalmologic Diseases 13. 3. 2023News Expanded Hemodialysis and Its Impact on Reducing Hospitalization Rates and Medication Usage
The number of patients with end-stage kidney disease is increasing. New approaches and technological advancements in recent decades have contributed to improving hemodialysis treatment. Does the use of so-called expanded hemodialysis lead to better outcomes?Source: Chronic Kidney Disease 30. 11. 2021Články časopisu Importance of Centric Relation Registration by the Patients with Complete Dentures

For the second time, a two-day meeting titled "ID 360 – Immunodeficiency in Interdisciplinary Collaboration" took place, this time on March 25–26, 2022, in Prague. Several current topics were discussed during this professional event, which brings together experts who care for patients with primary or secondary immunodeficiencies. The meeting was professionally guaranteed by Prof. MUDr. Anna Šedivá, DSc., from the Institute of Immunology, 2nd Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and University Hospital Motol in Prague.Source: Primary and Secondary Immunodeficiencies 13. 5. 2022News Comparison of the Effect of Sonic and Manual Toothbrushes on Dental Plaque and Gingivitis Control
A clinical study on healthy volunteers with mild to moderate gingivitis compared the effectiveness of sonic and manual toothbrushes in terms of dental plaque and gingivitis occurrence. The results of the study showed that the sonic toothbrush outperformed the manual one in all observed parameters.Source: Dental Care 16. 2. 2023News Prognostic Significance of Lymphopenia for Stratification of Patients with Follicular Lymphoma
The therapy of follicular lymphoma (FL) is guided by several prognostic indices, such as the Follicular Lymphoma International Prognostic Index (FLIPI). The retrospective analysis of 736 patients with FL presented below introduces a prognostic model combining FLIPI and absolute lymphopenia into an integrated FLIPI-L index. Absolute lymphopenia is crucial for stratifying patient OS and the risk of transformation.Source: Non-Hodgkin Lymphomas and CLL 17. 3. 2020News Efficacy and Safety of the Combination of Telmisartan and Amlodipine with Hydrochlorothiazide in the Treatment of Hypertension
The aim of the study by Korean authors was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of the triple combination of telmisartan/amlodipine + hydrochlorothiazide (TAH) compared to the combination of telmisartan/amlodipine (TA) alone in patients with essential hypertension who did not respond sufficiently to a 4-week treatment with TA.Source: Sartans in the Treatment of Hypertension 8. 2. 2022News Current Trends in Proton RT of Head and Neck Tumors: Aiming to Preserve T Lymphocytes, Without Them, Treatment is Ineffective
Tumors of the head and neck are often diagnosed at an advanced stage. With the availability of modern treatments, such as immunotherapy or radiotherapy modalities, prognosis and chances for long-term survival are improving. We discuss trends not only in proton therapy for oropharyngeal tumors and the prospects of combining treatment methods for these diagnoses with the head doctor of the Proton Center Prague Associate Professor MUDr. Jiří Kubeš, Ph.D.Source: Proton Radiotherapy 10. 6. 2024News Transthyretin Amyloidosis in Patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is considered a warning sign for cardiac amyloidosis. Amyloid deposits are often found in the tenosynovial material removed during surgery. However, the prevalence of concomitant cardiomyopathy is not yet fully understood. Japanese researchers from Kumamoto University recently focused on the relationship between carpal tunnel syndrome and cardiac amyloidosis in their newly published prospective study.Source: Amyloidosis 10. 11. 2023News Screening using NGS in patients with metastatic NSCLC – initial results from the ALK-positive cohort
Next-generation sequencing (NGS) allows for obtaining a large amount of information about the tumor genome from a patient's blood sample. Currently, the method is recommended as an alternative in cases of insufficient tissue samples for standard biopsy examination. The first results of an ongoing prospective study provide insights into the role of NGS in mutation screening for patients with non-small cell lung cancer without a concurrent biopsy examination.Source: Genetic Profile and Treatment of NSCLC 1. 11. 2021
