News Treatment of Diabetes in Pregnancy with Metformin Does Not Increase the Risk of Low Birth Weight

In several studies, it has been observed that exposure to metformin during pregnancy, compared to insulin exposure, is associated with an increased relative risk of the newborn being small for gestational age. The authors of the presented cohort study aimed to clarify this risk in comparison to women with gestational diabetes who were not pharmacologically treated.

News What a General Practitioner Needs to Know About Gliflozins

The revolutionary benefits of gliflozins have completely changed the perspective on the choice of pharmacotherapy for diabetes. They have attracted not only diabetologists but also cardiologists and nephrologists after the favorable effects of this group of drugs on heart failure and renal functions were demonstrated even in patients without diabetes. Dapagliflozin and empagliflozin were subsequently included in recommendations for the treatment of heart failure regardless of the presence of diabetes. Dapagliflozin has also been approved for the treatment of patients with chronic kidney disease.

News Effective antiosteoporotics from the aminobisphosphonate group can finally be prescribed by general practitioners from January 2024

Osteoporosis represents a serious societal problem generating numerous health and social complications as well as considerable economic costs. In the Czech Republic, it is estimated to affect 500−750 thousand people, or 5−7% of the population. From January 1, 2024, the prescription restriction for the indication and reimbursement conditions for the medicinal products Osagrand (ibandronic acid) and Risendros (risedronic acid) will be lifted, allowing general practitioners to prescribe them as well, under the prescription conditions listed below.

News After 20 years, a new treatment option for primary biliary cholangitis arrives

Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), formerly known as cirrhosis, is a rare disease with a negative impact on prognosis and quality of life. While ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) has been essentially the only treatment option for PBC so far, in 2016, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved obeticholic acid as a second-line option. Since 2019, this medication has been available and fully covered by health insurance in 11 selected centers in the Czech Republic.

News Association of M2 Haplotype of the Annexin A5 Gene with Recurrent Reproductive Losses

Annexin A5 (ANXA5) is a placental anticoagulant protein that ensures adequate blood supply to the fetus during pregnancy, and its deficiency can increase the incidence of vascular thrombosis in the placenta. Current research shows that the M2 haplotype of the ANXA5 gene may be associated with recurrent reproductive losses and obstetric complications due to placental disorders.
