News What are the patients' needs during acute phase schizophrenia therapy and how to increase their adherence?

Treatment of an acute episode of schizophrenia usually requires hospitalization in a psychiatric ward. Even though hospitalization causes discomfort and represents a burden for many patients, it enables quick and relatively precise diagnosis and timely initiation of adequate treatment and monitoring of its effectiveness. Recommended practices guide how to conduct such diagnostics and therapy. One of the symposiums at the 65th Czech-Slovak Psychopharmacological Conference, which took place in mid-January 2023 in Mariánské Lázně, also focused on the management of care for these patients during the first days of hospitalization and after discharge from acute inpatient care.

News Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension – Overview of Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is defined by the 2015 ESC/ERS guidelines as symptomatic pulmonary hypertension with persistent defects in lung perfusion despite adequate anticoagulation therapy. Significant values for determining a diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension are a mean pulmonary artery pressure > 25 mmHg. However, this condition remains significantly underdiagnosed, mainly due to its nonspecific symptoms.

News Previous Treatment of Osteoporosis May Affect the Efficacy of Romosozumab

A study conducted by a team of authors from several clinical sites in Japan shows that the type and duration of previous osteoporosis treatment just before starting romosozumab affects its therapeutic effect. Romosozumab, as an antibody targeting sclerostin, stimulates bone formation and suppresses bone resorption. The authors of the study investigated whether the efficacy of 12-month treatment with romosozumab depends on the duration of prior treatment with teriparatide, denosumab, or oral bisphosphonates.

News Ocrelizumab in the treatment of multiple sclerosis in real-world practice – a systematic review of published studies

In controlled study programs, ocrelizumab has demonstrated beneficial effects on improving clinical parameters in patients with multiple sclerosis, such as the annual relapse rate or confirmed disability progression. However, to get a complete picture of its clinical benefit, real-world evidence in a broad patient population is also needed. A systematic review of real-world clinical practice studies with ocrelizumab, published in March 2023, demonstrates its benefits in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) and primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) in terms of relapse frequency, disease activity on MRI, disability, absence of disease activity (NEDA), and quality of life.

News New scoring system for predicting long-term survival of AML patients over 70 years and suitable for intensive chemotherapy

Based on the analysis of data from 3 large European registries (DATAML, SAL, and PETHEMA), a prognostic score for 5-year survival was created and validated for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who were given intensive chemotherapy. The ESS70+ score, determined based on parameters known at the time of diagnosis, is easily usable in routine practice for estimating overall survival of older AML patients and facilitates decisions about intensive chemotherapy.
