Quality of Life in Patients with Extraesophageal Reflux

Overview
Objective:
The aim of the study is to determine the quality of life in patients with symptoms of extraesophageal reflux (EER).
Methods:
Patients with typical symptoms of the EER (hoarseness, throat cleaning, coughing and globus pharyngeus) lasting at least three months and/or symptoms of reflux laryngitis were included in the study. To determine the quality of life the questionnaire WHOQOL-BREF was used. The results were compared with population norm.
Results:
The study included 41 patients with mean age of 48 years. Patients with symptoms of EER had significantly reduced quality of life compared with a population in the domain of physical health (p = 0.0000) and a separate component of evaluating overall satisfaction with health (p = 0.0000). In the domain of physical health mainly pain, discomfort and dependence on medical care was negatively rated. In other domains, the results were comparable with normal population, except for the “negative feelings” in the domain of mental health.
Conclusions:
In patients with EER, lower quality of life compared with the general population was found in the domain of physical health and individual item “total satisfaction with health”.
