Overview

High alcohol consumption is a significant risk factor for secondary osteoporosis (1). Alcohol negatively affects bone metabolism through inhibition of osteoblastogenesis, increased osteoclastic activity, hormonal changes, and nutritional deficiencies. In addition, alcohol abusers are at increased risk of falls, injuries, and fractures, which are often more severe than in the general population. This text summarizes the knowledge on the effect of alcohol on bone health and focuses on lifestyle. Certain physical activities significantly increase the risk of fractures in this group of people, while others are beneficial.
