More than just a local defect: Neglected pain and nutritional paradoxes in chronic wound patients

Overview
Chronic non-healing wounds show a prevalence of 2–7% in high-risk populations. A significant portion of care occurs in outpatient and home settings, where laypersons perform more than 20% of dressing changes. These defects correlate with local hypoxia and systemic metabolic dysbalance. The Wound-QoL questionnaire indicates limitation of daily activities and high psychological stress. Analgesic prevention of procedural pain during dressing changes is not standardized. Care providers must not evaluate wounds exclusively as local skin lesions. Persistent inflammation and protein losses through exudate induce nutritional deficiency, which inhibits the healing process. Targeted nutritional intervention and analgesic therapy stabilize metabolism and modify patient quality of life. This text quantifies psychosocial burden, care logistics, and metabolic parameters in patients with chronic wounds.
