Thrombosis of the Cerebral Sinuses

Overview

The author presents a case-record of thrombosis of the venous cerebral sinuses in a young neurotic, otherwise healthy, single, nullipara with congenital thrombophilia due to a genetic heterozygous defect of a Leiden mutation of factor V. A life threatening complication developed after oral hormonal contraception with an oestrogen-gestagen preparation. The author discussses consistent with data in the literature the problem of etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, evaluation and assessment of this rare form of acute venous thrombosis.
