The authors present a review of causes of vertigo and impaired equilibrium in subjects of advanced age, frequently leading to falls. The study submits an analysis of more than twenty biomedical factors investigated in a group of patients examined on account of impaired equilibrium and a control group of volunteers of similar age but without vertigo. The two groups differ as regards the incidence of vertigo and falls while they do not differ in the incidence of subjectively perceived instability.
