Overview

Leptin is a protein hormone produced predominantly by adipocytes which in the most casesreflects the total body fat content. Leptin is supposed to be an important peripheral signal ofadipose tissue informing the hypothalamic satiety center about peripheral energy stores. Thesubmitted article summarizes the current state of knowledge concerning changes of serumleptin levels in various types of nutritional disorders. A possible etiological role of this hormoneon the induction and development of the above mentioned diseases is also discussed.
