Overview

Hydrocephalus is a pathologic condition, when the increased volume of cerebrospinal fluid leads to the dilatation of cerebral ventricles. The role in the etiopathogenesis of neonatal hydrocephalus play changes in the volume of cerebrospinal fluid, cerebrospinal fluid pathways and brain tissue, changes of intracranial pressure and compliance, alteration of cerebral circulation, changes of metabolism and secondary damage of white matter and cerebral cortex. An important part of the monitoring of hydrocephalus is the evaluation of neonatal brain by means of sonography – the assessment of brain morphology by transcranial ultrasonography and the assessment of cerebral circulation using Doppler sonography.

Key words:
neonatal hydrocephalus, transcranial ultrasonography, transcranial Doppler sonography, compression test
