Creation and verification of a nursing standard of patient education after myocardial infarction

Overview

Introduction: In post-myocardial infarction patients, education provided by nurses on dietary changes, increased physical activity and smoking cessation is highly effective. The effectiveness and impact of education focussing on secondary prevention following myocardial infarction may be increased substantially by standardisation of the educational process.

Objective: The objectives were to develop a nursing care standard called Education of Post-Myocardial Infarction Patients and to test adherence to the standard in clinical practice in a particular centre.

Methods: The first step was the development of a nursing care standard. Following a search of literature, evidence was analysed and evaluated for defining the processes of the standard. The basic STANDARD definition was formulated in accordance with Standard nursing care: an asset. Subsequently, interventions were defined, measured and selected using the Dynamic Standard Setting System. Then the standard itself and an audit protocol were developed. The second step was to test adherence to the standard in clinical practice. In a selected centre, the nursing staff were trained and the standard was tested. The adherence to the standard was assessed through an audit focussed on meeting the standard criteria.

Results: The developed standard comprises nine nursing processes complemented by justification, references to relevant literature and levels of evidence. The standard includes an audit protocol and educational materials for patients. The standard was tested in University Hospital Ostrava. The overall rating for the adherence criteria was 86.31%, which is consistent with the acceptable level of meeting the standard criteria of ≥ 80%.

Conclusion: The devel-oped standard was tested in clinical practice in a particular centre. The audit showed that individual steps of the standard can be adhered to in clinical practice.
