Septic shock in fatal pneumonia caused by Staphylococcus aureus: The significance of producing Pantone-Valentine leukocidine – case report

Overview

Necrotizing pneumonia caused by Staphylococcus aureus producing Pantone-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) is a rare but life-threatening disease. Early diagnosis of staphylococcal etiology is necessary for successful treatment. Linezolid is the first choice antibiotic that should be preferred to beta-lactams and vancomycin in this indication.

We report a case of 29-year-old man who was admitted for severe septic shock and incipient pneumonia and died 8 hours after admission despite intensive care. PVL-producing Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from the blood cultures.
