News Changes in Intestinal Microflora Correlate with Disease Activity in Patients with Lupus Erythematosus
The role of intestinal microflora in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, including lupus erythematosus, has been discussed for a long time. An American study discovered a specific bacterium whose proliferation in the intestine correlates not only with the occurrence of the disease but also with its activity.Source: Arthritis 4. 2. 2020News Options for Anticoagulant Therapy During Catheter Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation: Safety and Efficiency of Bridging with Dabigatran Compared to Interruption of NOACs
Catheter ablation is an established method for treating supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias. Patients with atrial fibrillation should also use anticoagulant therapy to prevent thromboembolic events, even during ablation. The number of patients being treated with new anticoagulants (NOACs) is increasing, but the use of direct factor Xa inhibitors poses a risk of life-threatening bleeding during catheterization if a specific antidote is not available at the healthcare facility. Options to prevent this complication include short-term switching to dabigatran or complete interruption of NOACs therapy with temporary heparin support. The aim of the presented study was to compare the safety and feasibility of both methods.Source: Anticoagulant Treatment 23. 6. 2020News How to Navigate the Challenges of Anticoagulant Therapy in Pregnant Women − A Case Study
Every carrier of a mechanical heart valve is also on anticoagulant therapy. Warfarin is most commonly used for this purpose, but it is not suitable during pregnancy due to the risk of embryopathy. So how should we approach patients with artificial valves who wish to become pregnant? The following case study presents one option.Source: Thromboprophylaxis 3. 1. 2024News STADA Brings Innovative Drug for Treatment of Advanced Parkinson's Disease to Czech Republic
STADA PHARMA CZ is introducing a new system for continuous delivery of 3 active substances for the treatment of advanced stages of Parkinson's disease (PD) to the Czech market. It is one of the major innovations in the care of PD patients in the last two decades. The drug, which STADA acquired the rights to in 2020, had already been introduced in the Nordic countries where this treatment is successfully underway. In the Czech Republic, it has been fully covered since April 1, 2022.Source: Parkinson's Disease 6. 4. 2022News Cardio-renal-metabolic syndrome in context
The increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and chronic kidney disease (CKD) ranks among the most significant health issues of our time. Based on recent studies, these conditions are likely interconnected at various levels, whether in epidemiology, pathophysiology, or patient prognosis. Consequently, the term cardio-renal-metabolic syndrome (CRMS) has been defined.Source: Heart Failure 16. 1. 2024News Lurasidone in Antipsychotic Therapy – A Case Study of a Virtual Patient from the Laurie Project
MUDr. Elis Bartečků, Ph.D., from the Department of Psychiatry at MU LF and FN Brno presented the current possibilities of telemedical education at the XIV congress of the Psychiatric Society of the CLS JEP in Mikulov, specifically the so-called virtual patient within the interactive online Laurie project by Angelini Pharma. The presentation involved the case of a 20-year-old man with a severe psychotic disorder and equally severe somatic comorbidity.Source: Modern Treatment of Schizophrenia 18. 8. 2022News Prolonged Course of Metastatic Stomach Cancer with Long-term Stabilization – Case Report
In the following case report, we present the case of a patient with a prolonged oncological disease – stomach cancer. The patient has been asymptomatic for a long time and in good performance status despite multiple lung metastases, thanks to stabilization with trifluridine/tipiracil treatment.Source: Treatment of Gastrointestinal Carcinomas 24. 5. 2022News Quality of Nutrition in ICU and Subsequent Quality of Life Are Closely Related
In the past decade, there has been a reduction in mortality associated with severe sepsis or acute respiratory failure. However, the number of people requiring care in rehabilitation facilities, moving to nursing homes, and never returning home has tripled. Therefore, experts' attention should now and in the future more intensively focus on the quality of life of patients, not just indicators such as mortality. Properly chosen nutrition contributes significantly to patients leaving intensive care units with good prospects for further recovery.Source: Enteral Nutrition 6. 4. 2020News Use of Bilastine in Pediatrics − Pathway to Improving Concentration and Performance of Young Allergy Sufferers
In the treatment of allergic diseases, especially in children, safety, good tolerability, simple dosing regimen, and non-sedative effects are the basic requirements for administered medications. Sedative side effects of treatment have a negative impact on sleep patterns and subsequently on children's performance in school. European professional societies recommend the use of modern second-generation antihistamines in the treatment of children. Studies confirm that bilastine, which meets these requirements, should be among the first-choice drugs.Source: Allergic Reactions 1. 10. 2020News Meta-analysis of the Metabolic Effects of Second-generation Antipsychotics
Second-generation antipsychotics used in the therapy of schizophrenia exhibit varying metabolic profiles. A recently conducted meta-analysis by Italian authors investigated the impact of second-generation antipsychotics on weight gain, BMI, lipid spectrum, and glycemia.Source: Modern Treatment of Schizophrenia 1. 11. 2022News Acquired Hemophilia A Newly Diagnosed in an Elderly Patient − A Case Report

Trifluridine/tipiracil is indicated for the treatment of patients with refractory metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), where clinical studies have shown it extends overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). At this year's virtual World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer of the European Society for Clinical Oncology (ESMO), held from June 30, a Spanish study on the efficacy of trifluridine/tipiracil in real-world clinical practice was presented.Source: Treatment of Gastrointestinal Carcinomas 9. 9. 2021News How Does Empagliflozin Stand in Terms of Diabetic Retinopathy Risk? We Have Answers Not Only from Controlled Studies but Also from Real Practice
Modern antidiabetics – gliflozins and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) – significantly help improve the management of type 2 diabetes (DM2). In addition to reliable glycemic control, they offer other benefits. For example, gliflozins are known for their cardio - and renoprotective properties. GLP-1RA also reduce cardiovascular (CV) risk, though clinical evaluation (SUSTAIN-6) suggests a possible higher risk of retinopathy. This is also being investigated with gliflozins. How empagliflozin fares in this respect has been shown by the prospective randomized EMPA-REG OUTCOME study and the real-world EMPRISE evaluation.Source: Diabetes 5. 12. 2023News Long-term Efficacy of Targeted Therapy for Axial Spondyloarthritis
How does etanercept fare in the long-term treatment of early axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA)? Data from over 10 years of follow-up in patients with both radiographic and non-radiographic forms of axSpA were recently published in the journal Therapeutic Advances in Musculoskeletal Disease as part of the extended clinical trial ESTHER.Source: Arthritis 19. 4. 2022News Intestinal Infection of Multi-Resistant NDM-Producing K. pneumoniae in a Patient with NK/T Lymphoma – Case Study
The incidence of NDM-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae is increasing worldwide. NDM beta-lactamase is a significant cause of multidrug resistance in enterobacteria to various antibiotics, including carbapenems. Currently, the most suitable approach for the treatment of intestinal infections caused by NDM-producing K. pneumoniae is considered to be the combination of ceftazidime/avibactam with aztreonam. The following case study also illustrates its use in more complicated cases.Source: Anti-Infectives 3. 3. 2023
