Exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) significantly affect disease progression, quality of life, survival, and cardiovascular events. What to do about them and how to address them most effectively? Why should future treatment also focus more on mucus plugs? And why is it important to consider COPD even in healthy smokers? These topics were discussed by Professor Jadwiga Wedzicha from the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London during a symposium supported by Angelini at this year's XXVIII Hradec Pulmonary Days.

News The Benefit of Liposomal Irinotecan in the Treatment of Pancreatic Cancer in a Young Patient – A Case Study

Pancreatic tumors continue to be a challenge in modern oncology. Due to the asymptomatic nature of early stages, most cases are diagnosed in advanced stages. The five-year survival rate of patients does not even reach 10%, and up to half of patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer never make it to the second line of systemic therapy due to the rapid deterioration of their overall clinical condition. In a case study from her own practice, Dr. Marie Beneš Kočová from the Oncology Department of České Budějovice Hospital shared her experience with the treatment of a relatively early-detected disease in a young patient.

News Monocyte Distribution Width as a New Indicator of Sepsis in High-Risk Patients

Most septic patients are first encountered in the emergency department, where sepsis detection is often delayed, partly due to a lack of effective biomarkers. The study presented below evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of monocyte distribution width in peripheral blood alone and in combination with white blood cell count evaluation for early sepsis detection.

News Cardio-Renal-Metabolic Syndrome?

The association between type 2 diabetes (DM2) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is often referred to as cardiometabolic syndrome, while the relationship between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and heart failure (HF) is known as cardiorenal syndrome. Additionally, an increased prevalence of ASCVD, CKD, and HF is known among patients with type 2 diabetes.
