Overview

Endocrine disruptors (ED) are substances which exist as contaminants in the environment and constitute a risk factor for human reproduction. They include xenoestrogens which are man-made chemical substances, and phytoestrogens which are natural chemicals found in the plants. These substances may mimic or interfere with the action of endogenous hormones. The impact of specific pollutants on mammalian organisms (reproduction organs, gametes and reproduction) can be tested in vivo (the mouse model). Specific doses of xenoestrogens had a negative effect on in vivo fertility and reproductive organs. On the other hand, specific doses of phytoestrogens did not prove to have negative effect on mammalian reproduction or other monitored parametres.
