The effect of biofeedback on pelvic floor muscle activation

Overview

The aim of the study was to evaluate how the use of biofeedback in the form of transabdominal ultrasound affects the pelvic floor muscle activation. The research group consisted of 25 healthy women, 17 nulliparous and 8 parous, aged 26.7 ± 4.9. The pelvic floor muscles activation rate was measured by transabdominal ultrasound Mindray M5 Ultrasound system ver. 1.0. The bladder base lift was evaluated, which indicates pelvic floor muscle activation. The measurement took place in a supine and standing position. In each position, the woman tried to activate the pelvic floor muscles using the analytical method, the Acral coactivation therapy, and the hypopressive technique. The resulting values of the lift of the bladder base did not show statistically significant differences in favour of the use of biofeedback with any method. However, the close to being statistically significant effect for the therapeutic use of biofeedback was shown in the supine position when using the analytical method.
