Overview

Alar insufficiency represents a functional and cosmetic dysfunction decreasing the quality of life of the patients. In the surgical treatment methods using grafts of autologous cartilage are used as well as surgical procedures, where the lateral ramus of alar cartilage is relocated and fixed by a suture.

The observed group of 12 patients was operated on by the method of cranial rotation of lateral ramus of alar cartilage. The results were evaluated immediately and 6 months after the surgery by subjective feelings of the patients as well as by objective examination of the nostril width in enforced intake of breath.

All patients declared an improved state immediately after the surgery. Six months later two patients evaluated the condition as the same as before the operation. The average nostril width in enforced intake of breath was 1.75 mm before the operation and 6.60 mm six months after the surgery. The method of cranial rotation of lateral ramus of alar cartilage represents an effective way of surgical treatment of alar insufficiency especially in patients, where there is not any marked damage to alar cartilage from previous injury or surgical intervention.
