Otoneurosurgical Treatment of Tumours of the Pontocerebellar Angle

The authors present the results of otoneurosurgical treatment of tumours of thepontocerebellar angle - 30 cases of neurinoma of the VIIIth nerve, two cases of meningioma and onecase of an arachnoid cyst. The operations were implemented by a translabyrinthine approach. Theauthors analyze the preservation of the facial nerve and its postoperative function, complicationsand vestibular compensation. They recorded anatomical preservation of the facial nerve in 97%,postoperative meningitis and liquorrhoea in 2.1%. The hospitalization period was 15 days in themajority of patients. The authors emphasize the advantage of the translabyrinthine approach withregard to the rapid development of vestibular compensation and general convalescence.
