Overview

There has been an exponential increase in the geriatric population worldwide, with the segment of people over 80 showing the most rapid increase in number. According to UN data, their numbers are projected to reach 153 million by 2025 and 379 million by 2050. Cardiovascular diseases are very common in old age and they are the most common cause of death (48–57 %, 2 times more than cancer). It is therefore considered to be a necessity for healthcare systems to reduce morbidity and consequently the healthcare dependence of these people. New modalities used in the treatment of aortic valve stenosis have demonstrated their usability and effectiveness in patients of advanced age.
