Overview

The general practitioner frequently sees pregnant females with anxiety and depressive symptoms and has to decide about treatment. Therefore it is essential to become familiar with the principles of drug treatment in pregnancy and breast-feeding and to know the risks and benefits. We have to decide whether to treat with psychotherapy, alternative therapies or pharmacotherapy. The basic principles of the drug treatment of anxiety and depressive disorders during pregnancy and breast-feeding are reviewed. We emphasize interdisciplinary cooperation between the gynaecologist, general practitioner, obstetrician, neonatologist and geneticist.

Key words:
pregnancy, breast-feeding, anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, psychotropics.
