Overview

Tuberculosis is still a major health problem, especially in developing countries. Nearly 2 million people die from tuberculosis each year. Extremely drug-resistant and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis strains present serious problems for the efficient control of this disease. Conventional methods for the identification of M. tuberculosis and detection of drug-resistance are slow and cumbersome. Determination of the genome sequence of M. tuberculosis has facilitated the development of new molecular assays. These new methods can be performed rapidly and offer high sensitivities and specificities. They can also be used for the detection of drug resistance. This review describes the current possibilities for the laboratory diagnosis of tuberculosis.

Key words:
tuberculosis, laboratory diagnosis, interferon gamma.
