Overview

The obscure etiopathogenesis of atherosclerosis is described in recent years by two theories - the inflammatory and autoimmune theory where immune mechanisms play an important part. Evidence of its action are findings of immunocompetent cells, macrophages and lymphocytes infiltrating the affected vessels in all stages of the disease. Attempts to make use of these mechanisms in the immunomodulation of atherosclerosis are so far successful only in experimental animal models.

Key words:
atherosclerosis - immune mechanisms - immunomodulation
